The first step in finding the best builder is to look for referrals. Ask in your close circle of friends and family. See if any of them have used or know of someone who does outstanding work. This way you already know they are a good choice and you can possibly check out the work they've done to see if it meets your standards. It's also important to note which builders did a bad job and avoid them. If this does not produce the results you are looking for do not just pick up the phone book and choose someone randomly. Building a home is way too important to pick a builder on a whim.

After you ask your friends and family you should have a list of builders you would like to find more about. (If not hit the internet and research a few testimonials from other clients to see if any of them sound like something you would like to use.) Now that you've found. After you have a list of builders you are going to want a list of questions to ask them and ensure that they're the right company for the job. Think of the most important questions you want to ask and write them down. Go to their website before calling them and see if your questions can be answered from there.

Can't think of any questions? Here are a few you'll want to ask. How many years have they been in operation? What industry do they specialize in? Are they a full-time professional constructor or only a part-time builder? Once you know the answers to these questions go to the Better Business Bureau and check up on their reputation.

When you narrow down your list the next thing you are going to want to know is if they are capable of building the house you have in mind. Ask the remaining builder(s) what type of custom homes they specialize in. Also ask how much time they spend on residential building. This will ensure that the builder you choose knows how to build the house you envision.

Now that you have covered the main topics you will need to find out what type of warranty this builder gives after the home is built. A good warranty shows that the builder is confident they have done a good job. Also, find out what post-sale services they are willing to do. While not many things go wrong with a brand new houses you want to make sure you're covered in the unlikely case that something does come up.

While it may take some time to find the right builder it will be worth the time spent. Not doing research on the builder you choose can lead to some serious problems and cost you hundreds even thousands to fix what has been done.
